IMac 2012 upgrade to ssd

I have an older iMac (late 2012) that had a hard disk failure but all other components were fine when diagnosed. Since this machine is generally used for web browsing by the entire family, I decided to try and replace the old drive with a new solid state drive myself (bought the replacement kit from OWC), considering the cost of a new replacement, I thought it was worth a try for 150 bucks. I successfully got the iMac operating and installed mountain lion OS X. I wanted to get a more recent OS so we could still use keychain ...and for other obvious reasons. I get to the installation screen for OS X El Capitan but it won’t install. Keep getting error message:

”OS X could not be installed on your computer

No packages were eligible for install. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance....”.

I am by no means an expert at this but I’ve kind of come to a standstill on how to install this OS X.

iMac 21.5″, OS X 10.11

You may have to go up to High Sierra

Using Safari go to > https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211683 and see if you can get El Capitan or better yet High Sierra.

Also for what it's worth, a 2012 iMac can be upgraded all the way to 10.15 Catalina.
