Trying to update numbers and it won't update

You haven't said what version of OS X or macOS you are using but I will venture a guess that it is Mojave, 10.14.x, or earlier. The current versions of Pages, Numbers & Keynote require Catalina, macOS 10.15, or Big Sur, macOS 11.0/10.16, to install. You need to update the OS before you can update the apps.
