Apple TV gen 2 set up without remote

How can I set up an Apple TV gen 2 without remote. When I try to use the remote app on my phone it asks me to input code but I can’t as I don’t have the remote.

Apple TV (2nd gen)

The software remote in Control Center on your iPhone would be compatible with Apple TV (3rd generation or later).

The software remote app from the App Store (no longer available, but still functional if you already have it) would be compatible with Apple TV (2nd generation or later).

Setting up the software remote would still require a functional remote to assist, for the 2nd-3rd gen models.

The advised solution is to get a replacement remote. You may need to link a new remote with the box before it will listen to it.
