I would like to select recently added music in my library in order to move it to my iphone but the display includes many albums I don't recognize. It's as if it were displaying items recently added not only to my library, but also to the apple store, all mixed in. I only want to see the music that is physically in my hard drive, but I can't "weed out" all those unrecognized items before selecting. Help would be appreciated!

OK, I "take back" one of the issues I reported... The way things are displayed it turns out I did not recognize music I did have. The problem was that when I tried to select a few recent albums ALL become highlighted. Then I remembered that if I chose to see by songs and not albums and selected the column "date added" I could highlight what I want and drag it (I'd never moved music to my iPhone; this is what I used to do with my iPod). So the issue is resolved! Thanks.

You can sync with selected playlists. Sync cannot copy anything that is in the cloud, isn't where the library thinks it should be, or comes from an Apple Music subscription, so it is only going to be able to copy content physically on your drive.

Thank you. Perhaps I did not explain myself correctly. ITunes notoriously misperforms on PC's, so I haven't used it that much. Perhaps the concept of library has evolved since the last time I'd used it. I think "my library" is what I have in my hard drive, nothing more and nothing less. So when I go to the "recently added" subfolder, I expect to see only what I have physically added to my hard drive... recently. That's what I'd like to "drag" to my iPhone. But what I see is music I know I have in my hard drive and music I've never heard of, which makes me think that "recently added" doesn't mean "recently added to my library" (which should be the case) but "recently added anywhere, including the store". In that case, perhaps what I hope to accomplish needs a few extra steps, and I don't know what they are...
For a long time now iTunes has included a feature where all your unhidden past purchases with the iTunes Store are listed along with any locally introduced content such as CD rips or purchases from other services. If you have either of the iTunes Match or Apple Music services this cloud content also includes your iCloud Music Library. If you want to view only what is stored locally use the option View > Only Downloaded Music.
The Recently Added section of the library shows the entire library in reverse date added order, grouped by album and ordered by disc and track number.
I recommend syncing with selected playlists over manually managing content. Once set up syncing will quickly update the device with any metadata changes in the library, ratings and play counts can sync in either direction, and it is easier to repopulate the device if it has to be restored or replaced. You can set things up so that new content in your library is automatically added to the device without you having to explicitly select it, but still ensure that you don't include more than you have room for.

Syncing is not an option, as I get no less than 5 messages saying it has failed (even though it's not set up to sync, because I want to have some measure of control).
I have never purchased any music. Everything I have are my own ripped CDs. This is what makes it so frustrating to see all this "noise" in the recently added subfolder of my library.

Ah yes, I forgot this disappeared in some of the Windows builds. A smart playlist is an alternative way to get the same view. You can also sign out of the iTunes Store.

Fair enough, although I would contend that syncing actually gives you more control not less.

So that is weird. Apart from the obligatory Songs of Innocence album by U2 they gave everyone years ago your library should only contain your purchase history and what you've chosen to add to it from local storage. When iTunes is first installed it may offer to scan your entire computer for media. Did you let it do this? Could it have picked up random resources from other software installed on your computer?
