What about adding a pdf file to the launchpad?
I tried adding the pdf straight to applications...it shows up in applications in finder, but not in launchpad. Yes, I am running the most up to date Big Sur MacOS.

Launchpad only shows applications. It doesn't matter where you store the file. It will not show anything but applications in the Launchpad.

Drag and drop it on the right side of the Dock.
It added a copy to the applications, again, but it still does not appear on launchpad.
You don't need Launchpad if the file is in your Dock.
A pdf file is not an application, the launchpad is for applications.
