after detaching audio from video in iMovie can I save each clip as separate files (one audio and the other video w/ no sound)?

Yes, you can save detached audio and the video clip with no audio. There are a couple of ways to do it.
The first way is to detach the audio and export it as an audio only file, and then mute or delete the audio and export the project again -- as a video file without audio.
Actually, before or after detaching the audio you can export the file as an Audio Only file (Share/File/Format/Audio Only).
That would leave you with an audio clip on your desktop. Then you can mute the video's audio portion and share out the project again as a video clip without audio.
Another way is to detach the audio and then select the detached audio clip. Do a File/Reveal in Project Media. The audio clip will be displayed in the Project Media browser. Select the audio clip in the Project Media Browser and do a File/Reveal in Finder. An Original Media pop up folder will show the audio clip's name highlighted. Copy drag (drag while holding down the Option key) the audio clip from the Original Media folder onto your desktop. Then you can go back to your iMovie project and either delete or mute the detached audio clip and export the movie as a video file without audio.
