Free up space to update software

This issue comes up daily on this forum. It is not possible to free up the storage allocated to "Other". This is part of the operating system and is read only. Messing with it would likely make your computer inoperable. If you have insufficient space to upgrade your OS, the solution is to purchase and install an external disk which you can copy files to, which can then be deleted from your hard drive to clear space there. These disks are readily available, reasonably priced, compact and easy to install with provided USB cables. Most do not require external power. You may have to reformat it, though. This is an easy solution to solve your problem.

The Other Category should not be altered, modified, moved or deleted nor should it be attempted to be. Doing so may corrupt the OS and rendered the OS inoperative requiring a Wipe and Re-Installation.

The Other category is a potpourri of files which include:

• System temporary files

• macOS system folders

• Archives and disk images (.zip, .iso, etc. - often found in the Downloads folder)

• Personal user data

• Files from the user’s library (Application Support, iCloud files, screensavers, etc.)

• Cache files

• Fonts, plugins, extensions

• Other files that are not recognized by a Spotlight search

• Media files that cannot be classified by Spotlight as a media file because they are located inside of a package

They can be located anywhere on your hard drive. The files that you have control over are located in the Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music and Movies folders.  You can use either of these two free apps, GrandPerspective  or OmniDiscSweeper, to find the largest files on your drive so you can determine if they can be deleted or moved to an external HD for storage.  

Your Profile is showing iMac 21.5″, macOS 11.2 Big Sur any reason for posting in Sierra ? Do you want it move to Big Sur ?

data in "OTHER" can not be deleted, app files, iOS files, and other details of the phone is that...
