New Mac Book Pro will not open docx files

When I retired, I put personal files on a flash drive. I can download the files, but the doc and docx files will not open. "Cannot open files at this time". I tried opening the files with the LibreOffice, did not work. Any suggestions?

Thanks so much.

Those are Microsoft Word files. Microsoft Word is a component of Microsoft Office. If you brought over Word from an older Mac, and it predates 2018, it may not be a compatible version with Catalina or Big Sur.

The 2019 version of Microsoft Office is compatible.

There are several Microsoft Office alternatives listed on my FAQ*:
