Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and if yout MacBook Pro is a 2007 or newer model, click on El Capitan. Otherwise, you can't.

If an application isn't compatible, upgrade or replace it.
If the computer isn't compatible, no; one which has an Xeon or Core 2 Duo(not Core Duo) CPU and isn't capable of El Capitan can run Lion.

I asked for help in upgrading to El Capitan and now know that I was missing an important point (I should have known): The critical upgrade file is loaded into the Applications folder. Clicked on that and all is good. Apple support didn’t make that step clear enough.
What happens if it's not compatible? Is there any other way?
