Does having the serial number of a MacBook tell anything about the laptop? I am considering purchasing a used MacBook but would like to know if it’s a legit offer

Whether there are hardware problems, or if the Mac was stolen, or if the serial number was copied, or if this purchase is otherwise going to a problem, the serial number won't tell you.
I wouldn't suggest purchasing any Mac that can't run Big Sur, generally.
Purchasing from a reputable seller with an established and tested return policy can be the best path, if not purchasing a refurbished Mac from Apple directly.
