RAM only affects the ability of the machine to multitask faster.


A 2009 iMac can at most install El Capitan on either internal or external drive.

You can get an external SSD in a Firewire case such as this one for the best speed on your computer:

it will take any 2.5" SATA SSD drive.

If you are still using Snow Leopard or earlier, read this tip on Rosetta.
