Transferring everything to a new iMac

Hello all, can someone please give me some advice - in simple language, not tech-expert speak.

My iMac is getting closer to its' end of life & before that happens I am thinking of treating myself to one of the new iMacs. However, my question is - how do I transfer everything which I want to keep - tons of music, photos etc - onto the new iMac?

Obviously I have time machine running on my current iMac (not that I understand how that would be of help in this instance) & I also have an external hard drive which I back up my music to.

Hoping you can give me easy to understand advice. Thanks in advance.

  • Make sure your latest Time Machine backup is completely up to date.
  • Eject Time Machine from the old Mac
  • Start-up new Mac
  • During setup, it should ask if you want to transfer date from a Time Machine back - answer is yes
  • Plug Time Machine from the new Mac
  • Restore.

It’s actually quite easy using Migration Assistant a built in application in the Utility Folder in Mac OS

First go into the initial set up procedure on the new Mac .

You will be asked to joint your Wifi network -do so

Set the set up process

You will get a prompt in the process to restore from Time Machine or use Migration Assistant or do a fresh install.

It that point make sure your existing Macs are running and logged in to the same Wifi and that both are connected to mains power.

On your existing Mac go to applications/utilities folder and launch Migration assistant ( short cut just type migration in the search field)

Once launched and open go through the prompt menus presented

On the existing Mac choose Migrate to another Mac

On the new Mac choose from another Mac on the new Mac your old Mac will appear.

Your will be asked for old Mac Password go ahead and enter that .

A couple choices can be made about what you want transfer so select which ones you require.

A code will be generated on the old Mac that you type on the new Mac

Hit start and the transfer begins . Go watch movie or two !

Thank you for your replies. The all new colourful iMac isn’t available to buy until later in May, but I will follow the advice given here.

Also I must ask, is there a way to find out if I have any unwanted nasties on my iMac which I obviously don’t want to transfer over to a new one?

Many thanks.
