Final cut crashes over and over (caused by custom Photoshop-LUTs)

Suddenly, my FCP crashed and kept crashing again and again. After hours I found the problem.

Simply: I used a custom LUT on a clip

I exported a color lookup-table in Photoshop and used it on one clip in my timeline.

When I skimmed over the clip, FCP crashed. It took my hours to find out that it's just one clip causing the crash. I can reproduce it on other clips or projects.

I was able to open the project and start the export as long as I did not touch the timeline. The export caused a crash as well. I guess the export cannot render the "bad clip".

The only work-around for me: I opened the project, clicked through all clips in the timeline and checked on which FCP crashed. Once I identified the bad clip, I selected all clips before and after and copied them to a new project. I just had to make sure that I did not touch the "bad clip".

I can provide the LUT's if someone is keen to replicate the crash :-)

It puzzles me why the photoshop LUTs do not work.

Maybe FCP runs out of memory or something else?

Possibly.

300 MB is quite a large file. I have no idea how FCP processes it, but it does seem clear that it was having trouble with it.

Glad that all is well.
