I currently have the el capitan software and it wont let me update to the new software
How do I update my software? It says I have no updates but my software is currently El Capitan and I need to update to the new software

The age of your Mac hardware dictates how far you can upgrade your Mac, not the operating system that you are running. El Capitan has long gone out of Apple support, so there will be no further updates for it. If your Mac is really old, you may not be able to upgrade beyond El Capitan.
From the menu > About This Mac panel, compare the information in parenthesis on your product description line, to the hardware requirements in How to get old versions of macOS. Use strictly the Safari browser.
Perform a Time Machine backup prior to any upgrade. Verify that your third-party application vendors and your printer/scanner vendors support the destination operating system
