When I move photos to a new album let’s say work why are the photos still in the main album isn’t that using more space

When I create an album for my work photos why do the photos stay in my original album isn’t that wasting space

That is the intended behaviour. You can add photos to albums you create yourself. But you cannot remove photos from albums that have been created automatically by Photos. Adding photos to an album does not duplicate the photo. It just a reference. Each photo is stored only once in the library and all albums are using the same version of the photo. you an add the photo to many albums without using extra storage.
