Sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod using your computer - https://support.apple.com/HT201253

You'll need to be using the latest iTunes version and also your macOS upgraded to the latest it will run (High Sierra).

Hi Limnos,

I had the latest versions of iTunes and High Sierra. What was happening was that when I connected my iPhone 12 to the Mac a box came up telling me that a download was required to recognise my iPhone. During this download it would abort. I tried this several times in the weeks before I submitted my question. So, after I received your reply I tried again. This time the download was successful, even though in the last few seconds a different message came up telling me that I would have to go to System Preferences and carry out some changes (the dialog box only stayed up for a few seconds so I didn't get the full detail). I thought this was odd and didn't carry out any changes.

Anyhow I restarted my Mac and my iPhone 12 was recognised by iTunes and was Synced successfully.

Glad you got it working. I remember getting that iTunes upgrade to work can sometimes be tricky. Since neither High Sierra or iTunes are supported by Apple but Apple does tend to keep support going a bit longer for features that relate those system it's kind of a twilight zone when it comes to the upgrades and their working. Some people had to delete old iTunes altogether to get the upgrade to "take".
