MacBook Pro won't start up properly

I work in a school and one of my users brought her MacBook Pro that I believe is running Sierra. Anyway, when you power it on, the apple comes up and the progress bar moves slowly towards completion, then it gets about 1/2 way then the screen goes white. I tried all the white screen options I saw in apple support, but it doesn't get far enough to allow me to run anything, disk utilities, download a new OS, it just sits in the white screen with nothing happening. Any suggestions? It feel like the disk has a bad spot or something preventing the device from completing its power up cycle.

Thank you,

OLPHAndy
