To be clear:
The current version of iOS for a 6th generation iPod Touch is iOS 12.5.3, a far cry from iOS12. I believe there have been six or seven updates beyond iOS 12 that the 6th gen can use - plus (once iOS 13 was released) a further ten updates specifically for the 6th gen iPod Touch
While the 6th generation iPod Touch cannot (and will never be able to) update to iOS 13 - or beyond, if Apple release a further update specifically for the 6th generation model, it stands to reason that it will be iOS12.x.x.x. and on.
