when I was reading an article online I pressed a continue tab and pages started opening up and there was a recorded voice saying that I have been infected with a virus. It was rather alarming and seemed urgent.

You got lied to by an advertiser on the internet.
Calling telephone numbers can be faked, sending email addresses can be faked, auction sites can offer lost or stolen (and thus useless) products, etc.
