NEF files from Nikon Z6II not supported

Well, i've bought a New professionnal caméra, the Nikon Z6II. The NEF/RAW files are not supported by my iMac running on Osx Mojave.

In the Raw devices supported i Can see in the apple menu, the Nikon Z6II IS listed ! So i'm surprised not being apple to see it on my computer finder or edit it in Apple Photos as it should work. Could you confirm me that ?

In the RAW Support list for Mojave (Digital camera RAW formats supported by iOS 12 and macOS Mojave – Apple Support) the Nikon Z6 is listed, but not Nikon Z6II. Raw Support is specific for each Camera model and system version. The RAW Support for your camera model appears in the list for macOS 11 Big Sur, so you should upgrade to Big Sur, if possible:

It's sure not possible to upgrade to this version of OSx for multiple reasons. No 32bits support for instance, too early systems,...

When I check the "RAW support" on my MAC, I can see Z 6 2 is supported. But, what's strange is that Nikon don't mention this camera like that in a RAW file opened in NX Capture, it's called Nikon Z 6II.

Is there any clue I can't find there in "com_apple_mobileAsset_RawCamera_Camera" assets ?

I find there so "Sony Alpha7m3" drivers that should have been added, don't know how exactly. But I have also that camera, that works fine. Does it means, Apple have detect I need that and download it from somewhere ?

Is it how works the system ?

searching Nikon Z 6 in the file "com_apple_mobileAsset_RawCamera_Camera.xml"

Sorry for disturbing you again with my problems, but I'm pretty sure they are clue that should help to solve that problem in that path located in the library system of Mac OSX called "com_apple_MobileAsset_RawCamera_Camera".

Remember, I'm using OSX Mojave and I can spot references about Nikon Z 6 2 in the Raw Supported format, so it should be my Nikon Z6II. in the .XML files, I can also find references on all the Raw supported format, including that camera.

You can see that folder including data from the Sonyilce-7m3. it have been created in 01/2020 when I bought that camera and add support on my computer. There are no mention of my other older camera, Nikon D4, D750 or D800 probably because they are natively support by the OS.

It won't work with my Nikon Z6II, I'm investigate why. Perhaps a problem to detect it as Nikon call it Z6 II and Apple Z 6 2 ?

I've just test a NEF file downloaded from DPPreview from the first Nikon Z6. Then you can see a new folder have been created with all the data needed to let it works. Files dates from the 21 April 2021.

Does it works well with Big Sur ? May be something to fix to let it works ? Perhaps it's just a porblem of "name reference" ?

Yes, Leonie, it really could help. I've a park of many iMac Pro, Mac Book Pro, but all of them running on High Sierra or Mojave. For instance, High Sierra also mention the Nikon Z 6 2 in the same list...

So does it means when the OS detect he's trying to open a RAW file he doesn't know, he's downloading the asset data needed to open it ? But not doing it automatically on a "non-bigsure" OS... so perhaps someone that can open that kind of RAW from the Nikon Z6II could check if there are something special added in this AssetData folders ?

For instance, i've a file created in 01/2020 when I bought my Sony Alpha 7, this file content those informations

... so I don't understand that politics that stop the "Apple Camera Raw updater" and force to completely update all the OS. That's non sens for the user.

I also don't understand why those "Camera" was announced in the full list of camera in my OS if it finally blocked by the OS version.

I've just test also with a new camera from Canon, Canon R6, and it's also not opening the file.

Definitively, Apple can't just not update the Raw Support of new product on older OS if they don't allow constructor to propose that support.

Jul 3, 2021 8:02 AM in response to Keith Barkley

Thanks for your reply Keith.

I've imported few NEF files in Photos yesterday. Files still in it, but nothing happens.

I've downloaded a NEF files from a "new camera" i don't have, the Nikon Z6 (the first edition), then after few seconds, finder was able to render it, and Photo can import it.

As marked up, i can have seen then the OS have added a new RAW support in the folders.

I will not worked directly with the Z6II, nor the Canon R6, but i don't have test your method with the sample of the R6 to have a better overview of the problem.
