I like to keep all the apps on my iMac 2021 open in the same window. However, from time to time, when I click on one of these apps, my original window sweeps aside and the app opens in a different window and I have to toggle between the two. This is making my life difficult. What can I do to stop this from happening? Thanks in advance for any good advice.

We want to be sure we’re on the same page. Each app should have its own window, though if you prefer to have all apps on one Desktop or in one space that is certainly doable, as long as an app isn’t opening in full screen. When you right/secondary click on an app in the dock under Options, which Desktop is checked? You’ll see options for This Desktop, None, All Desktops or maybe even numbered desktops.
By choosing ‘This Desktop’ that app will only ever open on the currently active desktop. Here’s a bit more about working in different spaces on your Mac. Work in multiple spaces on Mac
