Step 4 for iCloud backup is “Make sure that your device's screen is locked”. How do I do that?

You can lock an iPhone screen by using the right side button. Or do what I do when automatically backing up my iPhone to iCloud while it is charging -- just leave it lock itself based on the time selected in Settings > Display & Brightness > Auto-Lock.
