Im trying to update my Macbook Air which has not been updated in last couple of years. what do i need to do when it says incompatible updates?
current software of the device: Software OS X 10.9.5 (13F1911)

Make a Time Machine Backup Before attempting. Notation - Mojave is the Last version to support 32 bit applications / extensions and Drivers. Catalina and Big Sur Only support 64 bit and there is no workaround.
Are there any AntiVirus, Disk Cleaner, Optimizers, Defrag, VPNs etc installed which should be removed as per Developers Instructions. They are useless, unneeded, cause havoc and interfere with the normal operation of the OS and may even Corrupt the OS requiring a Reinstallation.

Before the more recent macOS your Mac could run, we'd need to know exact details
on which 'build year model' your MacBook Air really is. ~ Dozens of models exist.
Probably the slightly newer El Capitan 10.11.6 could work as a bridge once installed
to allow a later macOS to be installed; and bring the MacBook Air further along.
"Safari downloads the following older installers as a disk image named InstallOS.dmg
or InstallMacOSX.dmg. Open the disk image, then open the .pkg installer inside the
disk image. It installs an app named Install [Version Name]. Open that app from your

OS X El Capitan 10.11 can upgrade Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard
This could be key upgrade, to later more recent macOS version; perhaps High Sierra or Mojave?
