My verizon.net email suddenly isn't working

Thanks, that post by Axel Foley fixed "my" issue. I'm not sure why my one specific account was selected for "enhanced security" nor why their crappy password is any more secure than my own password. I had to create two separate and distinct app passwords, one for Mac mail and one for iPhone/iOS. FWIW, that account was already protected with an alternate email and an associated mobile number. Yet I logged into their web based mail portal using my original password and I used that password to access the AOL security section to generate one of their "old third party app" passwords. It feels like that they are tying to push people to the AOL app.

I think this the beginning of a sys admin nightmare. I have three other Verizon/AOL mail accounts that have yet to turn, my wife has four accounts and my kids have one. Every device needs their unique password.

SOLVED. You can still use Verizon.net email. AOL help seems to be outdated after they required a two step verification method. Delete your Mail account on IPHONE. Add it back choosing AOL, not OTHER. You will use your Verizon.net email and AOL password. Then follow steps to accept. Sorry for the poor photo image. Just use AOL, not add other account like AOL help page states. All your mail will be loaded instantly. It will say AOL when you open your MAIL, but you can change that by going into settings, Mail, accounts, aol, go to description, change AOL to Verizon

A similar thing happened to me. I have four email accounts but only one was affected. Ironically I can access the mail account with the same password using the AOL web portal (https://mail.aol.com/webmail-std/en-us/suite). Using the mail connection doctor, both incoming (pop) and outgoing (smtp) servers time out with an "unrecognized account/password" error message.

If you sign into your AOL.com Account, you should see all of your emails there. I would suggest taking some time to delete all mail that you do not need/want anymore. Then, using the method I described, all will be reloaded back onto your iPhone.

Does Verizon use two-step authentication? If so then you may need an app specific password for the email account.

I have the same issue, looking at the memory size in settings of my iPhone, the email account is quite large. If the verizon account is deleted will all that email be deleted also?
