If you purchase a device from Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller the warranty starts the day you purchase. If you purchase it from a third party then the warranty started the day the third party purchased it from Apple or a Distributor. In that case there could possibly be no remaining Apple warranty on a device depending upon when it was purchased.
