Audio under bootcamp

I have an iMac with a bootcamp partition. Both Mac and windows sides are working perfectly except that there is no audio on the windows side ("no speakers or headphone are plugged in"). Oddly the problem is completely resolved if I restart to windows from the mac side either by:

  1. Restarting in windows from Startup Disk Preference on the mac side
  2. Selecting the boot camp volume in the startup manager (by holding the option/alt key on restart)

Otherwise, the sound never works if I allowing the computer to restart into windows. Somehow the mac side has to have control of the boot to windows for sound to work
