Can’t update Apple Watch when transferring to new phone.

I am transferring my Apple Watch to a new phone (don’t have the old one). When I pair the watch with a new phone, it says the watch needs to update. When I click update, it says unable to check for update (since the watch isn’t set up yet, it’s not on WiFi). So it seems like the watch needs to be updated before it can be set up, and it needs to get on WiFi before it can get updated, but it needs to get set up before it can be on WiFi. Is there a fix for this?

Until you unpair from your old phone you won't be able to pair with your new phone;

From a web browser,sign in to iCloud.com with your Apple ID.

Go to Find iPhone.

Click All Devices at the top of the screen.

Click your Apple Watch.

Click Erase [device]. Select Next until the device is erased.

Click Remove from Account.
