Is there a way you APPLE can contact the owner of appleID registered with S/N of stolen iPhone and let him know that it has been found?

Hi.

Long story short, apparently I bought a stolen iPhone. Activation lock is ON. Is there a way you APPLE can contact the owner of appleID registered with S/N of this iPhone and let him know that it has been found? I will give it to him.

To add a bit to the others' comments, if you believe that this phone was stolen, you need to bring it your local law enforcement agency and turn it over to them. You do not want to be in possession of stolen property.

Alternatively, if this phone was lost, in order for the original owner to be able to locate it, would be if they had enabled both "Find My" prior to it being lost, and then, enabled "Lost Mode" afterwards. Then, if this phone is left powered-on and has Internet access, they could attempt to include a "who to contact" message on it.

well, here is the long story. I bought an iPhone 8 from the second hand. I checked it. It was actiated. The appleID has been signed OUT. It was running IOS 14.4. I signed in with appleID and was able to connect it with iTunes. AppStore worked as it should. All seemed right, except two things:

  • no option/button to update IOS (General - Software Update was missing)
  • no option/button to factory reset (Erase All Content and Settings was also missing)

So I updated IOS via iTunes and tried to activate the iPhone. Here it comes. The Activation Lock is ON with dotted appleID.

It has Wifi connection so if the owner enabled Lost Mode then it should come up.

Yes, Tesserax is right, I will turn it over to police station. Hope the owner reported it stolen. If not then it will collect dust on the shelf.

Thanks guys.
