Had to turn off security to be able to use Airplay--not a good solution. Any other ideas?

When I set up my Apple TV, the screen said to hold my phone nearby so that it could join my home network. Bluetooth was on--nothing happened. I rebooted the Apple TV and my iPhone--still nothing.

When I try to Airplay from my Mac to Apple TV, the "Living Room" (the name of my Apple TV) option is grayed out.

I went into settings and chose "Allow everyone to stream to this Apple TV" and now I can stream from my MacBook and iPhone to the Apple TV but I'm a bit uncomfortable leaving security so open like this, especially since I live in a big city and now I'm sure my Apple TV is showing up on other people's phones, Macs, etc.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Communication between your devices should happen over your home network, i.e. often the same Wi-Fi.

Then set AirPlay Access to allow for ‘Anyone on the Same Network’. Then only devices on your home network can AirPlay to it, and it wouldn’t show up for other devices.

Password requirement can be On or Off, but is mostly cumbersome when there is no accidental AirPlay in your household from devices on your own home network.
