I downloaded the software from the app store and tried install it. Instead of a smooth installation, the program locks up when I try to choose the disk for the installation. I have around 40 GB of free storage on my driver and the computer is a Macbook Pro from late 2013 (so it should be supported). At the moment my software is OS X 10.9.5. I would really appreciate any help I could get.

yes, your MBP is supported. however, you need more free space available. when upgrading from el capitan and earlier to big sur, you need at least 44.5GB free.

I would try upgrading to El Capitan first…
I listened to your advice and freed up space on the computer. Now I have 60 GB of free space and still the installation program froze when I pressed continue after choosing hard drive.
Do I have to completely clean my drive and get a fresh start or is there any way to fix it?
