iCloud - Photos on Macbook

In System Preferences > Apple ID, I click on 'Photos' to enable iCloud sharing so that my photos will appear in Photos on my MacBook. When I click, it says 'Checking Library...' with a turning wheel and then that disappears and nothing has changed.

What should I do to enable iCloud photo sharing?

Thanks

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.5
