I have been unable to update my Ipod Touch 6 to ios 14. My current software is 12.5.4 and it states it is up to date. I have tried to update through itunes and the ipod is not recognized. I have tried using help and apple support and so far the ipod is not recognized on itunes. I have a PC running Windows 10. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

iOS 12.5.4 suggests that you have a 6th generation iPod Touch, which cannot be updated to iOS 13 or later. Apple have been clear on this point.
If you run the Check for Update procedure, the reason you see the message that your iPod is up to date is because it is up to date. That is, it has the latest version of iOS for that model of iPod. Yes, there is a later version of iOS, but your iPod cannot use it, so it is "up to date - for that model".
It's always possible though, that your iPod may (and note especially, the operative word - "may") receive future updates. As has already happened with this model; there have been security updates, within the iOS 12 range, to ensure the iPod's integrity. Those updates have not introduced any new features as far as I'm aware.
I notice your use of "iPod is not recognised" and "not recognised on iTunes":
If you mean that the software update procedure is not recognised, we've covered that point. However, iTunes can still use and manage your iPod, so if iTunes is not seeing the iPod at all, then that's a different issue. Your response was very helpful. Since I cannot update IOS, I may not be able to access the Audible books. I have emailed them to find out if my iPod 6 is useless now for audio books.
I still cannot get iTunes to recognize the iPod. I restarted the iPod and PC. I deleted the Audible app and downloaded it again.
I have changed usb ports and still nothing. I would love other suggestions. Thank you

That could be interesting. I had a look at the Audible app, and according to the App Store, "it works on my iPod" but immediately underneath it states that the app requires iOS 14 or later. My iPod is a 6th generation, running iOS 12.5.4 and cannot install iOS 14, so it cannot use the app. I even tried downloading the app but once the store actually tried to do so, I get the message telling me it requires iOS 14.
So some misleading information in the store.
I'm often puzzled by developers who rush to update their apps to the point where the app will not work on earlier versions of iOS. The obvious consequence of this is that they lose customers who are not able to update to the required version. I'm sure they'll tell you that their update is a security measure, but as stated above, that's exactly what the last few updates to iOS 12 have been.
