Time machine backup

I was using a Samsung T5 portable SSD as my Time Machine backup (MacBook Pro 2016, Mac OS Big Sur 11.6). It was working, but now it says it's disconnected and nothing I do will reconnect it.

Sounds like the external drive has failed—
