Finder search - a bug or feature?

I'm trying to understand if this is a bug, or a feature that I couldn't find the documentation for:

Removing the 'D' from the search means that I no longer get any results. This makes it hard to find one of the 3 files above by searching for something like '688'.

Change two, possibly three things:

  1. In Finder Preferences > Advanced, set When performing a search: [ Search the Current Folder ]
  2. Spotlight controls the results of your search in Finder, and there are keywords that can be used to narrow your search results.
  3. In System Preferences > Spotlight > Search Results, ensure Images is selected.

kind:image name:dscf0688

This will only search for image files with the particular case-insensitive string in the filename. It can be a partial string if sufficiently unique. Without the keyword(s) focusing the search, Spotlight will search everything, including the web, if so configured.

And, you might have better luck using the search field in an ordinary Finder Window, rather than invoking the Find panel in the Finder via ⌘+F.

  1. Check
  2. I don't want to narrow down as I'm not getting any results at all
  3. Check

Using your suggestion and searching for 'name:dscf0688' gives the same results as I originally mentioned, so no improvement here. Narrowing the search down to 'name:688' also leads to zero results, as I originally mentioned. Also no improvement here.
