Migration assistant

I want to migrate data and settings from a Macbook Air (2015) to a new Macbook Air (december 2020).

The new machine is saying it is not recognising, and says to update the system. Which I did, but the error is still there. I have done the sic reset, but that didn't work either.

What are other options to make this work? I have no time machine or other possibilities to transfer the data. I am relying on Apple's migration assistant.

Hello Onno1968,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Based on your post, you can't get your information transferred with Migration Assistance due to error about updating the system. We'll do our best to assist.

How are you connecting these Macs together to use Migration Assistant? Are you using a Thunderbolt cable or Wi-Fi?

Try disconnecting these Macs from one another, restart both Macs normally, and then reconnect them to test out Migration Assistant again.

Should it persist, which macOS version are you using on the MacBook Air 2015? Are you using Big Sur? If so, make sure the older Mac isn't running a newer version than the newer Mac.

Hoping to hear back, take care.

One might be better off not using Migration Assist to move from an Intel Based to New MBA M1 Apple Silicon CPU.

Applications that may have worked on Intel and if an older version of macOS may not function as well or at all on the M1 MBA. Doing so may create some major issues on the new machine. That and if there were unresolved software issues on the older machine - the migration may bring the old issues to the otherwise virgin installation of Big Sur.

Once can alway get an inexpensive drive and copy personal files over to the new machine and avoid introducing the pre-existing issues from the older machine.

UPDATE: I have created a Time Machine back up from the old machine. And tried to use that for migrating the old Macbook Air.

Unfortunately, i am getting the same message. When i choose time machine to put a back up back. the new Macbook Air Big Sur is still saying it cannot install and that I should update the system.

Any ideas?
