big sur 11.6 unable to adjust permissions - can't save word file but can save excel

MacBook Pro 13-inch, 2017, running Big Sur 11.6. I can save an excel file, but not a word doc. I receive "Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error. I open finder, select "get info" on Macintosh HD, clicl the lock in the bottom right so its open and try to save and still get the error. I have tried doing the same to the documents folder, I have tried to add my account to the user & permission and still get the permission error.

How do I fix the permission issue?

Verify your third party software is up to date and compatible with the macOS.

If you have Office 2011 for Mac or before WILL NOT run, For Catalina Office 2016 for Mac needs to be v15.35 or later.

Microsoft recently announced that it was officially ending support for Office 2016 for Mac on October 13, 2020.

The current Office for Mac; Office 365 or Office 2019 (One-time purchase) are OK with Catalina/Big Sur
