Big Sur Mail App Search

In previous versions of the Mail app, the Search input box in the toolbar was a consistent width, whether it was active or inactive. In Big Sur (11.8), Search input now expands when active and contracts to an icon when not active. How can I get the Search input box to behave as in earlier versions—with a fixed width regardless of it's active status?

SOLUTION: I just figured out the solution—slow day! I have a 27" iMac. When I expand the Mail app window to fit full width of the screen, the wider Search input appears and is constant whether it's active or not. If you reduce the window width to roughly 3/4 or less of the total screen width, Search input changes to an icon when not active, widens when it's active.
