Safari search wont work!

I just purchased a used but excellent quality Apple MacBookPro laptop, it has Safari search engine it wont allow me to do any searches, why not? So frustrated! I'm very new to Apple laptop

Safari is a browser— does the browser work? Are you connected to the Interenet?

you can always change search engines. Safari>Preferences>Search

Try a different browser and compare your results.
