Copying to USB 3.0 thumb drive in FAT32 format fails due to time out

Why, after 50 some years of personal computing, can Mac users still NOT simply transfer files to Windows based media, especially thumb drives -- and please don't even bother explaining how to start in recovery mode and use the terminal.

is there not a simpler fix?

Thank you, but it unfortunately warrants complaint, especially having been a Mac user since 1985 and putting up with really simple stuff for decades now that should just work.

I now have a 2018 MBP loaded, a 13" MBP and a 2021 Mac Mini. Attempts on all three to copy a 10 GB .mov file to a brand new Sandisk 16GB capacity USB 3.0 thumbdrive failed on all three machines, all throwing a "time out" error. Attempts to use Disk Utility to reformat said thumbdrive produced the same profoundly unhelpful error.

So, the question is, are there workarounds wherein I don't have to gerryrig basic Mac/machine code just to get it to do a simple, everyday function?

Thanks again. Sincerely. But this very thread makes my point -- your reply would have been soooo helpful to get on screen instead of the aggressively useless "operation timed out."

Also, your reference for all this is wikipedia (to which I donate every year)?? Hardly the first place to seek an answer to a basic question the largest tech company in the world could avoid altogether by simply making it easier for users to solve (and Apple doesn't even need donations).
