Blurry content when copied from pdf file using Selection tool in PREVIEW

I am using macOS Big Sur 11.6.

When I copy something from a pdf file using selection tool (rectangular box of broken lines) in PREVIEW, and paste it MS word or MS Powerpoint, it becomes blurry?

Is there any fix for this issue?

Any help is highly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

Try taking a screenshot instead of using the selection tool in Preview.

Do Shift-CMD-5 then you can resize & move the screenshot window at will. When you have outlined the section you want, hit Return. It will save the image to your desktop as a PNG, which you can then drag/import into Word/PPT.

ps. In a similar experience, I have found that when you try to save a reduced-size PDF in Preview (File > Export > Quartz Filter > Reduce File Size) the resulting PDF file is very blurry. I suspect Preview is doing something similar when you select/copy/paste. (No such problem in Acrobat.)

Blurry on a printout, or blurry on your screen? There is no fix unless you can control what Word and Powerpoint choose to do with the content on the clipboard. Testing below was done with Preview on macOS 11.6.1.

When you use that rectangular selection tool and copy that content to the clipboard from Preview, it resides on the clipboard as a PDF and a TIFF image. When pasting into the Microsoft applications, and depending on how they are written to accept clipboard content, the object that arrives in those applications may be either PDF or TIFF. The TIFF image will likely be 72 dpi, though the PDF content would be resolution-independent unless the Microsoft applications are converting PDF into 72 dpi jpeg or png during the paste operation.

I don't have MS Office here to further test this.
