upgrading MacOs Monterey on Mac Big Sur 11.6

Cannot be installed on Macintosh HD, not enough free space. Cannot be installed on WC Backup, the volume is not compatible with this update.LaCie is not formatted as MacOS Extended. Now what? Get a 2T Macintosh HD? I tend to upgrade whenever they indicate it is needed.
