I would like to change my icloud email address which is also my apple id?
when I try to create a new email address I get this error:
You can only add the @icloud.com address that is already on file in your account.
is there a way to to change it to have a brand new name?

No. However, you can create an eMail alias (up to 5). Go here: Add and Manage eMail Aliases for iCloud Mail on iCloud.com - Apple Support
