I need help with os x capitan

My Mac on Saturday opened in Guest User ID and will no longer open in owner/administrator. There is no way to switch back and forth between guest and owner and Apple support was unable to help me with this issue. There are documents that I have not backed up and have not transferred to an external hard drive, so it is imperative that I am able to recover these documents. Anyone have any advice or would be willing to help. Thank you for your help.

Hi GgordonAU 🇲🇸

I guess Apple Support would have tried a simple "Restart" etc.

If you can:

You might want to check you have enough memory/storage free (at least 50 Gb free) for your Mac to operate smoothly.

(Eg: Apple Menu > "About this Mac" > Storage

Or

Could third-party (non-Apple) apps be interfering with the normal operation of your Mac ?

(Eg: Chrome can use excess energy / incompatible apps and unnecessary virus checkers can cause interference, etc.)

If so, using an uninstaller from the developer usually proves the safest, and most effective removal)

So we know your OS is El Capitan, but it may help attract more expert help from our volunteers:

if you posted the year of manufacture of your Mac (from "About this Mac") here,

and what kind of Mac (MacBook, iMac ?)

we're talking about.

All the best :-)
