Creating a macOS Monterey bootable USB

Hello all,

I have a 15inch 2017 MBP. I have upgraded my MAC to macOS Monterey. I feel my laptop is a bit sluggish and going to give it to my son for his use. I now want to do a fresh install of Monterey instead of continuing with the upgrade. I'm unable to create a bootable USB as when I download the macOS from the APP store, it automatically quits after download with an error screen since it is already in Monterey. Can someone help me here to create a bootable USB?

I was able to download the installer app using the Terminal command.

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 12.0.1

I then erased and formatted a 32GB USB stick with name Untitled in HFS+ format and ran the following in Terminal.

sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled -- /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app
