Alternating color rows - not working for first column

I suspect column A has been defined as a Header Column, and that Alternating Row Color applies only to the Body cells in alternating body rows. Header Columns (and Header rows) have their own colour fill, which overrides the Alternate Color fill.

Thanks for joining and chiming in, Badunit.

Good extension, and one I'd neglected. Here's an extension that avoids much of the drudgery from doing it with a long table:

• Start with the original state of the table—assigned colour fill in the header row(s) and column(s), no fill in the body rows:
• Select all the non-header rows of the table. (You can include header column cells in this selection, but they won't be changed by the first steps.)
• Click Format to open the Format Inspector, and click the Alternating Row Color box to check it. Click the beachball by the color well beside it to choose the colour you want to fill the alternate rows.

• Select rows 2 to 5 of column A
  • (Ignore the row numbers shown in the illustrations—I constructed the example on a table with several rows hidden.)
• Set all four cells to Color Fill, and set the colour to match the coloured alternate rows.
• Then deselect the cells on the rows that should be coloured, and set the colour fill on the still selected cells to No Fill.
• Reselect the four cells, then, press option-command-c to copy the style of these four cells.

• • With Cells A2 to A5 still selected, scroll to the bottom of the table and shift-click on the last cell in the column to add it and all cells between it and A5 to the selection.
  • With all cells from A2 to the last cell in column A now selected, press option-command-V to paste the alternating styles into all selected cells.

Takes some time to describe, but much less tim to do!

You can 'override' it by not defining column as a Header column, but that would also cause Column A of it's useful Header column properties.

You can manually set the fill color in every other row of the header column if you need alternating color and it has to be a header column. If your table isn't very long it's not all that much work.
