Monterey displays messed up

For the last several years I ran a macbook (1st monitor) (various models) with dual (2nd and 3rd ) external monitors, each it's own display. Having upgraded to Monterey, one (2nd) monitor works independently and the other (3rd) seems configurable as a mirror but not independently, or perhaps I'm just too upside with the issue to understand the menuing to mitigate the problem. The "3rd" is also "wiggly" and the display size does not look configured correctly at all.

OK, here's what I've tried and learned.

  1. Disconnect all external displays.
  2. Reboot
  3. Connect one external display and assure it works as "extended."
  4. Connect the second external display and get a "preferences error" in Monterey
  5. Disconnect/reconnect display and reset to extended; stop mirror (if mirrored)
  6. Done, returning you to the display arrangement; Rejigger back in order as this will force pseudo-random position
  7. Verify your menu is arranged on your preferred display (the laptop for me)

Optional: enjoy your cheese.
