Is there a multi-media remote that can be used with the ipad at all? I remember having something like it fifteen years ago for the macbook I think. Just a remote that can mute the sound or play the video or pause and stuff.

if you mean if the ipad can be controlled by the old IR remotes macs used to come with then no, it does not have an IR receiever
if you mean if the ipad can be used as a remote for other devices then again it does not have an IR transmitter, some AV stuff may have apps in app store like sony or samsung and the likes which allow it to have some control over recievers and tvs and the likes
