... adding iMac as monitor to MacBook Pro 16"

I currently have a MacBook Pro 16" connected to a Dell Monitor. I would like to add my iMac 21.5 Mid 2011 desktop as an additional monitor. What cable/adaptor will make this happen ?

Both of your machines must meet the requirements in this Apple document: Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support

I doubt if your 16" MacBook Pro qualifies as it's too new - 2019.

After much research I found that a Thunderbolt3 cable and a Thunderbolt2 adaptor are needed to connect the iMac to the MacBook Pro. After purchasing the cable and adaptor I now have 3 screens working together however, my wireless mouse and keyboard will only connect to either the iMac or the MacBook Pro but not both. Could there be a setting on the iMac that needs changed so the iMac only works as a monitor?
