If there is a problem with the (USB) cable or the (USB) printer port, you may want to try a normal wireless connection (not using the special AirPrint technology under Mac OS X 10.6) from the old computer instead (drivers required here) via a Wi-Fi router. The old computer could be connected wirelessly, or wired (Ethernet) to one of the LAN ports of the router. The printer would be wirelessly connected to the router.

Also, an HP Photosmart 6520 is listed in About AirPrint - Apple Support as a model supporting the driverless AirPrint technology. This means that it should be possible to use this printer with an iPad as well, provided that the printer and the iPad are connected to the same Wi-Fi network (router).

There are several printers (often, older models) that could be used with an earlier operating system. Do you already have a printer (if so, which exact model), or are you looking for one?

There is also the matter of being able to install a print driver for the printer that will work with your operating system.
