connect macbook to imac

How can I connect my MacBook to my new iMac? I want to use the iMac as a second screen. I am using the usb c cord to connect the two but; when I press F2, it is not working?

Do I need an adapter to connect usb c too?

Sorry but no can do. Please carefully read Target Display Mode. Bottom line is if you need an external display for your MB then please buy one. iMacs are computers, they are NOT external displays for other devices including other Macs, IOS devices, PCs, etc... You will find an external display to be less expensive (does not require expensive cabling), easy to set up and dead reliable.
